This 20th VOSH-New York
medical mission was held again under the auspices and invitation of the
Peruvian Army and the Ministry of Health 2014 in Pichari, Peru. Our team consisted of 3
optometrists, 2 ophthalmologists, 2 optometry students, plus support personnel
were joined by a team of local Peruvian counterparts, which allowed us to see
about 1500 patients in 3 days of clinic at Pichari. From the optometric side of the
mission, most received either used prescriptions eyeglasses when available and
appropriate, or a donated new frame with their written eyeglass prescription
(local opticals were contacted previously and will put it together either
pro-bono or at a reduced rate). Patients
with pterygia also received sunglasses.
47 surgical procedures were
performed, including 20 for cataracts, 25 for pterygia and 3 for glaucoma.
